Video: We Are Enfant Terrible - "Snap Dragon (Double Dragon remix)"

Dec 07, 09

We Are Enfant Terrible, the sweaty 8bit-infused rock act of Frenchies we've been loving lately just wrapped up a quick criss-cross week through their homeland. Today, they've just released a new video for their song "Snap Dragon" which got the remix treatment from another crew from the largest territory in the European Union, Double Dragon. The clip is a total blip-fest send-up of the 1980s video game of which the remixers took their moniker, throwing the three members of We Are Enfant Terrible into the game with punches and kicks and flailing musical instruments. So, basically just a 2D version of their live show.

Getting Sassy with...You Say Party! We Say Die!

Dec 07, 09

We here around THE CULTURE OF ME were once obsessed with all things relating to Sassy and Dirt magazines. And while those titles are long gone, the sentiment of how they covered the culture industries has indeed left its mark on writers and culture vultures everywhere. It is because of that influence that we are proud to present our features post, "Getting Sassy with...", wherein we bring you that much closer to your favorite bands by way of a simple Q&A session that's both painless and informative. Ha! Beat that, FOX News!

This time: You Say Party! We Say Die!.

Canadian electro pop outfit You Say Party! We Say Die! stole our beating hearts right out from under us in 2007 with Lose All Time, their second record that was filled with bratty shouting-at-the-world dance punk fervor and endless, reckless glee. It's a terribly good bit from the five-piece and they've been prepping the release of their third studio album since the tours behind Lose finished up, and, well, they've gone ahead and done it. The band's latest, XXXX, will be finally available for all to swoon after on February 9, 2010 (it's already out in Canada so get it on import if you can't wait). We caught up with riot girl singer Rebecca Ninkovic while the band impatiently waits for the record's release, and got her to tell us stories of her bottomless day bag, house parties in Nova Scotia and her sort-of obsession with Beyonce recently. We're pretty sure our hearts have gone missing again.

Name?
Rebecca Ninkovic.

Hometown?
Abbotsford, BC, Canada.

I now live in:
Abbotsford, BC, Canada.

Number of states visited:
Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota for a grand total of 19.

My favorite place in my hometown is:
My sister's place where my nieces and nephew live. I miss them the most while on tour and I know they're going to be a little bit bigger when I get home.

Most recent phone bill total:
95 dollars, we had a lot of long distance interviews to do this month.

Items found in my day-to-day bag (if applicable):
Keys, red heart key chain, and very old pocket knife, make up, a slingshot, collective organizer, sewing kit, writing book, fine tip black pen, Yogi ginger tea packets, Slippery Elm lozenges, pure licorice pellets, vitamins and herbal supplements, locally made natural licorice flavored Chapstick, red change purse and various cards: bank card, license, etc., sunglasses and Altoids curiously strong peppermints (the only mints I can ever find in gas stations without any fake sugar or chemical junk), thermos.

First album bought on your own?
Arrested Development on cassette tape. I can't remember what the name of the album was but it had "Mr. Wendal" on it.  [Ed. note: it was on 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of...]

Favorite song memorized as a child?
It was an old hymn. I don't know the name of it, I think "I Was Once In Darkness", but I would hum the whole tune when I was only 10 months old.

The one song that must be on every mixtape is:
“The Things That Dreams Are Made Of”, The Human League.

There's way more with Rebecca after the jump.

News: We & Lisa release their Winter EP

Dec 07, 09

Like everything that's come out of Sweden since at least 2001, We & Lisa, a four-piece band making sleeper hits filled with lazy guitars and multi-shaded leafy vibes, are amazing. It's subtle and nonchalant music that's completely crush-worthy and slow like honey. With guitars, bass, synths and metronome drums, We & Lisa are shaded in reverb and semi-twee whispy Postal Service Ben Gibbard-stylized vocal treatments, the guys have been releasing singles, CD-R's and EPs since 2004 and their latest, the excellent Winter EP, features grey skied songs about lovers and loneliness, happiness and melancholy--you know, wintry stuff.

Download: Yolanda Be Cool - "Holy Cow" + remixes

Dec 06, 09

Tropical tech from a group with a rad band name that's as good a cultural reference for the sullen youths of today as any, Yolanda Be Cool just released their newest original track and remix package for "Holy Cow", a tune that's as big as the sun and in parts, just as bright. The duo of Johnson Peterson and Sylvester Martinez represent Hollywood roughhousing and Bollywood dreaming to a T within, making the best kind of mashing of culture shocks. It's a big tune with a ton of style and, well, we think it's perfect to get involved with.

Video: Ian McCulloch - "The Killing Moon (acoustic)"

Dec 06, 09

This past Friday night at Webster Hall's downstairs performance space, The Studio, East Village Radio, ourselves and Sheena Beaston hosted a very intimate and spectacularly frank performance from Echo and the Bunnymen front man and wild haired gent, Ian McCulloch. It was an acoustic affair, with McCulloch joined onstage only by a glass with ice and a bottle of brandy. For six songs, McCulloch was raspy (he'd been fighting voice problems all week) but appreciative of the opportunity and even a little bit affable the whole time. This song, the 1984 classic Bunnymen track "The Killing Moon", finished off his set. Very special thanks for the team from LA-based bigMethod for hooking us up with Ian.

News: Massive Attack posts NSFW teasers to video for new single "Paradise Circus"

Dec 05, 09

Massive Attack's fifth studio album, ready for release on February 9, 2010 (yeah, we're already amping up releases from late winter 2010), is entitled Heligoland and it features a laundry list affair of guest appearances, not just from the group's original line-up and colaborators Horace Andy, Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall but also stars like Hope Sandoval, Damon Albarn and TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. The lead single from Heligoland, "Paradise Circus", has a video coming out on Monday and to whet the appetites of fans, the band has released a triptych of totally NSFW video clips starring former porn star/erotic actress Georgina Spelvin discussing--alongside footage--the film "The Devil In Miss Jones". The clips, all of which can be seen here, are certainly not lacking in, er, "punch".

Tracklist:

01 Pray For Rain (feat. Tunde Adebimpe)
02 Babel (feat. Martina Topley-Bird)
03 Splitting The Atom (feat. Robert del Naja, Grant Marshall and Horace Andy)

Download: Phonat - "Ghetto Burnin' (Mojito remix)"

Dec 04, 09

Whoa whoa whoa. What a tune this. "Ghetto Burnin'" gets a super smooth overlay from Mojito and the Phonat track that's as it was already a hugely excellent nu-disco track from the Italian young blood gets next level stops-starts and a middle build that's, in a word, classic. The vision here won't unstick itself from our brains right now and we've been looping it so much in the past few days. Phonat's first record, a twelve-track monster that swivels and swells between every electronic genre foundation imaginable, is out now via iTunes on Mofo Hifi.

Download: Salvador Santana - "Keyboard City (Dan Deacon re-edit)"

Dec 04, 09

Bay Area-based Salvador Santana has a heart of straight gold. The multi-instrumentalist artist, after taking a trip to South Africa, Santana vowed to use his music for a cause and to make a difference, not just a profit, so he went ahead and is now using his own Web site and earnings to raise awareness about various non-profit organizations, each of which will receive a percentage of his profits. "Keyboard City", the title track for Santana's first release got some pretty heavy play and a ton of ears due to a pretty stellar remix treatment from The Hood Internet and a verse from Wu-Tang alum GZA. And recently, that remix treatment got YET ANOTHER remix treatment, this time courtesy of man-child Dan Deacon, who's taken The Hood boys' process and filtered it through his own loopy sieve of psych themes and child-like playtime bent. The track is illuminated from within by Deacon's beaming light and while it doesn't exactly conform plush with GZA's verse, it's still a very very interesting cut. Let's hope that Santana can keep his earnings up, but we're not doubting that happening given the completely necessary buzz the two treatments of "Keyboard City" have created.

Download: AC Slater - "Play The Record Again"

Dec 04, 09

Ripping up a sample of a Henry Rollins spoken word piece about the non-merits of rave culture, the notion of DJs as musicians and the triteness he feels about it all, AC Slater's newest deep rave bassline cut "Play The Record Again" is a perfect morsel of smoky basement lasers and foggy, wobbly low ends. Slater, named by Beatport as one of a handful of folks to keep watch over in 2009 and all signs these past twelve months have been leading them to be right for certain. Slater, member of the Trouble & Bass crew and constantly touring DJ/producer, is and should be a master-level artist in 2010 and it's tracks like "Play The Record Again" that make that process much easier to consider.
